Warschau Holocaust Collection Contributors

The Jewish Holocaust Collection includes the personal collections and files of Sheboygan residents who survived the Holocaust and its aftermath. Material contributors are Fela (who died on Sept. 20, 2006) and Anschel Warschau (who died on June 13, 2013); Lucy Baras (who died on Feb. 5, 2002); Regina Jacob (who died on April 10, 2015); Lucy and Robert Matzner (Robert died on Aug. 23, 2016); and Morris Zelpe (who died on June 14, 2002). These photographs were taken by portrait photographer Gene Schuttey. The family of Ben Racer also made posthumous contributions on his behalf.

Anschel Warschau

Ansel Warschau
Ansel Warschau moved to Sheboygan with his wife Fela in 1951 after surviving multiple concentration camps. He supported his wife Fela's Holocaust education efforts and contributed his own stories. He passed away in 2013.

Fela Warschau
Fela Warschau survived the Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps and later dedicated her life to educating people about the Holocaust. Fela passed away in September 2006.

Lucy Baras
Lucy Baras lived under Russian and German occupation of Poland. The hardships she survived took her father, mother, and brother. She came to the United States in 1949 and passed away in 2002.

Lucy Matzner

Lucy Matzner
Lucy Matzner survived a concentration camp until it was liberated by the Russian army in 1945. She passed away in 2017.

Morris Zelpe

Morris Zelpe
Morris Zelpe was born in 1914 in Poland. He was separated from his family during WWII and later imprisoned in Russia. He married his wife, Stella, in Germany, and they later moved to Sheboygan. He passed away in 2002.

Regina Jacob
Regina Jacob lost her entire family during the Holocaust but kept her story private until 2013 when she donated a written copy of her account to Mead Library. She passed away in March 2018.

Robert Matzner

Robert Matzner
Robert Matzner was 12 when the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939. His contribution to the Jewish Holocaust Collection includes a harrowing tale of escape from a "death march" as the Germans fled the approaching Allies. He passed away in 2016.
