21st: The Songs of Larry Penn for Uke (6:30-8pm): Larry Penn was a legendary Milwaukee, WI based Folksinger and Songwriter. Some of his work is housed in the Smithsonian Folkways Catalogue. Lil Rev was a close friend and was mentored by Mr. Penn over 30 years of friendship and later they recorded a record together. Larry's songs were recorded by over 40 national acts and Pete Seeger recorded his most famous song, I'm A Little Cookie, at Carnegie Hall. Every year, Rev helps to organize a tribute to Larry Penn concert in Milwaukee.
This class will showcase some of Rev's very favorite Larry Penn songs and hopefully inspire you to dig a little deeper into the Penn Catalogue. We'll strum 4-5 Larry Penn songs, Rev will take about Larry Penn's life and we'll also hear from some special guests as well in this special 90 minute class.
22nd: By The Light of The Silvery Moon: Written by Gus Edwards in 1909, By The Light of The Silvery Moon is a perennial classic sung by uke- clubs, barber shop quartets and entertainers the world over. We'll learn to strum and pick a simple version of this tin pan alley gem in the key of A.
23rd: The Blues Scale in F & G: Let's do a deep dive into the blues scale in the keys of F & G on the ukulele. Learn how to create riffs, improvise and see how some standard blues licks are applied to simple 12 bar blues song.

Lil' Rev was born and bred in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with dual passions for music and education.   After college he taught music to grade schoolers at the Milwaukee Jewish Day School and served as an adjunct music historian and lecturer at The University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.  After many years of performing in the Midwest, Lil' Rev left his teaching jobs behind to pursue his musical dreams full-time.  Since then, he has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles, visited every state in the Union (except Alaska and Hawaii), wrote almost a dozen instructional books, recorded over a dozen albums and taught thousands of students ukulele and harmonica.

Ukuleles are available for checkout at Mead Library's first floor desk. Ukes are available on a first-come, first-served basis and circulate for 28-day periods.
