Free Tax Help Promotional Image

Volunteers from the AARP sponsored Tax-Aide program will be at Mead Library on Wednesdays and Thursdays from Feb. 4 to April 9, 2026, to provide free tax preparation for seniors and low-to-moderate income taxpayers.

Registration Opens Jan. 14, 2026

Who is Eligible?

Before you register, please make sure you meet the following requirements to ensure Tax-Aide volunteers will be able to prepare your return:

  • You must be a legal U.S. resident with a Social Security or ITIN number
  • You must have been a Wisconsin resident for all of 2025 (out of state taxes cannot be prepared)
  • You cannot have divorced in 2025, or plan on having a filing status of “Married Filing Separately”
  • You cannot have had rental or farm income in 2025
  • There are other tax situations that fall outside the scope of the preparer's training that might impact whether or not your taxes can be prepared. If you have an uncommon situation, please inquire before making your appointment.

Registration is required and will be available beginning Jan. 14 by calling the library at 920-459-3400 or in person at any service desk. Please note:

  • If you are filing a joint return your spouse is required to be present—or you have power of attorney— while your taxes are prepared (medical/work exceptions allowed; please state when making an appointment)

Preparing for Your Appointment

  • Pick up the required Intake/Interview forms at the first floor service desk to fill out ahead of your appointment time, or download the forms (see below) to print and fill out, or arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your appointment to fill them out. These forms must be filled out every year so prior year forms cannot be used.
  • Bring photo IDs and social security cards for yourself and everyone (spouse, children, dependents) to be included on the tax return
  • If you have an Identity Protection Pin Number (IP PIN) from the IRS and/or the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, bring the documentation along for it
  • Bring a copy of last year’s tax return or the most recent one you have
  • Bring all forms and information required to complete your 2025 taxes, and please have all items removed from their envelopes and organized in logical fashion
  • Bring your bank account information (routing & account numbers) if you want your refund(s) direct deposited or tax(s) owed direct debited
  • Bring your Real Estate Property Tax Bill for 2025 and record of property taxes actually paid in calendar year 2025 if you are a homeowner or amount of rent paid for primary residence in 2025 (If applying for Homestead Credit, a rent certificate signed by your landlord is needed)

Please call the library if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment so the time slot can be made available for someone else.
