From homemade sci-fi fan mags to punk manifestos and riot grrrl declarations, zines have long been a vehicle for voices on the margins. This talk traces their rebellious history — exploring how cut-and-paste pages built communities, challenged power, and shaped culture far beyond the reach of mainstream publishing.
Chris McAllister Williams teaches classes in poetry, game writing, and the avant-garde in the Writing and Applied Arts program at UW–Green Bay. His research interests include procedurally generated storytelling, aleatoric creative practices, and the intersection between poetry and games. He is also interested in the DIY ethos and aesthetics that connect small-press publishing, zine culture, and independent creative communities.
