DESCRIPTION:In the Weeds Book Club is brought to you by Green Bicycle Co.
in collaboration with Paradigm Coffee & Music, Sheboygan Active Transp
ortation, and Mead Library.\r\nThis is a book club that is meant to get
into the weeds” on topics of interest to our community. We read thought
-provoking books then meet each month for 4 months per book, to discuss th
e themes and examine how they might be applied to ideas and actions for th
e City of Sheboygan. The book is available to borrow from the library or p
urchase from Green Bicycle Co.\r\nOur first book started in November of 20
22 and based on enthusiastic requests for continued conversations, subsequ
ent meetings are scheduled for 2023. Organizations are also invited, when
appropriate, to share how ideas and impact can be made through their organ
ization. With that in mind, Bay Lakes Regional Planning Commission joined
us in February and will join us again in March for a discussion and feedba
ck on their Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) that includes the Metrop
olitan Planning Area - at the heart of which is the City of Sheboygan. The
report details traffic analysis, existing conditions, future projections,
and recommendations that impact how the City evolves. Conversations will
continue in March and April, and the City Department of Public Works will
share their work on a Complete Streets Policy for us to discuss and provid
e input in addition to the LRTP and other urban planning topics like housi
ng, zoning, and parking.\r\n \r\nStrong Towns: A Bottom-Up Revolution to
Rebuild American Prosperity by Charles Marohn Jr.\r\nThe book discusses ur
ban design and will help us dig deeper into why inducing growth and develo
pment has been the conventional response to urban financial struggles alon
g and how cities can focus on bottom-up investments to strengthen the comm
unity financially and improve people's quality of life.\r\nRemaining
Meeting Dates:\r\n	March 9, 2023, 5:30pm - 7:30pm, The Loft\r\n	April 13,
2023, 5:30pm - 7:30pm, Rocca Room\r\nEmergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Ch
anging Worlds by adrienne maree brown\r\nInspired by Octavia Butler's
explorations of our human relationship to change, Emergent Strategy is ra
dical self-help, society-help, and planet-help designed to shape the futur
es we want to live. Change is constant. The world is in a continual state
of flux. It is a stream of ever-mutating, emergent patterns. Rather than s
teel ourselves against such change, this book invites us to feel, map, ass
ess, and learn from the swirling patterns around us in order to better und
erstand and influence them as they happen.\r\n	May 11, 2023, 5:30pm - 7:30

Inequality, Polarization, and the Decline of Civic Life by Eric Klinenberg
\r\nWe are living in a time of deep divisions. Pundits and politicians are
calling for us to come together and find common purpose. But how, exactly
, can this be done? In Palaces for the People, Eric Klinenberg suggests a
way forward. He believes that the future of democratic societies rests not
simply on shared values but on shared spaces: the libraries, childcare ce
nters, churches, and parks where crucial connections are formed. Interweav
ing his own research with examples from around the globe, Klinenberg shows
how “social infrastructure” is helping to solve some of our most pres
sing societal challenges. Richly reported and ultimately uplifting, Palace
s for the People offers a blueprint for bridging our seemingly unbridgeabl
e divides.\r\n	September 14, 2023, 5:30pm - 7:30pm, The Loft\r\n	October
