DESCRIPTION:A program of the Mead Public Library Foundation and the Wiscon
 sin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters:\r\nChanges in the environment d
 isproportionately impact tribal communities across the nation. Many indige
 nous communities depend upon a healthy environment for spiritual, ceremoni
 al, medicinal, subsistence, and economic needs. Many tribal nations locate
 d in present-day Wisconsin maintain knowledge systems that relay the inter
 connectedness with the environment and lifeways. This presentation will to
 uch on what traditional perspectives are and why they are important and vi
 tal to the environment in order to build resilience to the changes that ar
 e occurring.\r\nOur speaker, Sara Smith, is a citizen of the Oneida Nation
  of Wisconsin and is the Midwest Tribal Resilience Liaison with the Colleg
 e of Menominee Nation - Sustainable Development Institute (CMN-SDI), in as
 sociation with the Midwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (MW CASC). A
 s the liaison for the Midwest, she works on facilitating stronger relation
 ships between Tribes, climate researchers, organizations, academic institu
 tions, and the MW CASC. In addition, she works with Tribes to build capaci
 ty and provides support by helping identify gaps and assisting with climat
 e resilience efforts. Sara holds a Master of Science in Ecology from the S
 tate University of New York – College of Environmental Science and Fores
 try and an undergraduate degree in Biology and First Nation Studies from t
 he University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.\r\nAll are welcome to join Sara Smit
